Guwahati: Newly-constructed GMC Market in Ulubari inaugurated

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s newly constructed market in Ulubari was officially inaugurated by Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah. The event was attended by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania and senior officials of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

Built at a cost of Rs 78 crore, the modern two-storey facility boasts 103 stalls spread across two floors, with every vendor’s room equipped with ceiling fans. According to Mayor Sarania, the market’s design prioritizes comfort for vendors and shoppers alike. This revamped market marks a significant upgrade from the original market established in 1977.

The modernization of the Ulubari market is part of the city’s broader efforts to upgrade public infrastructure and support local commerce. With its improved facilities, the market aims to enhance the shopping experience for residents and provide better working conditions for vendors.

Notably, the GMC had previously floated tenders for the construction of the balance portion of the multi-storied market building at Ulubari, with a tender value of Rs 44.82 lakh and an earnest money deposit of Rs 89,640.

GMC in collaboration with Guwahati Jal Board (GJB), subsidy sanction letters for availing free water connection were handed over to three committees of public and religious institutions.

To promote the safety and dignity of sanitation workers, protective gear was distributed to five drain labourers of Engineering Division, underscoring the Corporation’s focus on worker’s health and occupational safety.

Recognizing the academic achievements of students, GMC diaries and gamusas were presented to three meritorious students, who have recently passed Class 10 or 12 and are children of GMC employees.

Additionally, copies of the latest edition of GMC Act with all amendments over the last few years were distributed among relevant stakeholders to ensure enhanced statutory awareness and compliance.

These initiatives, undertaken as part of ‘Sewa Day’, exemplify GMC’s enduring dedication to responsive urban governance and the welfare of Guwahati’s citizens.
