Guwahati: In a unique initiative to blend public art with environmental awareness, noted sociologist and artist Dr Kasturi Hazarika has installed a public art piece at the Six-Mile bus stop in Khanapara, opposite Lily Hotel, Guwahati. This installation, a first-of-its-kind in the city, aims to engage the public on the importance of bird habitats and bird life conservation.

Dr Hazarika, who holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of York, is known for her work in social practice and community-based public art. Her latest initiative transforms an everyday urban space—a bus stop—into a site of meaningful public engagement.

“Bus stops are a place where people spend time waiting for their daily commute. They occupy an important place in public spaces,” Dr Hazarika said. “I am trying to see how bus stops could be a place of communication on various issues in our society today, through use of public art.”

The project does not only raise awareness on environmental concerns but also adds visual vibrancy to the urban landscape. “Public art in bus stops would help in adding visual appeal and liveliness to our city spaces. Such projects serve the dual purpose of city revitalization and social communication,” she added.

Dr Hazarika expressed her gratitude to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Guwahati, for their support in making the installation possible.
