GUWAHATI: A vaccination programme aimed at eliminating rabies from Assam has commenced in Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s (GMC) Ward No. 1 near Khanamukh Bridge. The programme, launched on February 5 by the NGO Just Be Friendly (JBF) in partnership with Mission Rabies Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS), aims to vaccinate thousands of dogs in the city.

The first phase of the vaccination drive began on Thursday, with 42 dogs vaccinated on the first day. JBF founder and managing trustee Sashanka Sekhar Dutta said, “On the first day, 42 dogs were vaccinated. The goal is to increase the pace in the coming days to ensure widespread coverage.” The vaccination drive will be carried out in a ward-wise manner, with larger wards divided into manageable areas.

Teams will work closely with local animal caregivers, feeders, and rescuers to ensure that every street is covered. As the campaign progresses, authorities are hopeful that the initiative will significantly reduce rabies cases in Guwahati, promoting better public health and animal welfare. India records the highest number of dog-bite injuries worldwide, causing more than 20,000 human deaths annually. The Assam Rabies Elimination Project is a crucial step towards controlling the spread of rabies in the state.
