Guwahati: On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Indian Railways reaffirmed its strong commitment to combating the growing menace of drug abuse and illegal trafficking through the railway network. With a focus on protecting the nation and its youth from the devastating impact of narcotics, the RPF continues to play a crucial role in preventing the misuse of the Indian railway system for drug smuggling.
Drug abuse has emerged as a major global concern. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), around 296 million people consumed drugs in 2021—a 23% increase over the past decade. The vast and accessible nature of Indian Railways often makes it a target for drug traffickers, who exploit unreserved compartments, sleeper coaches, parcel vans, and even passengers as unsuspecting carriers. Despite these challenges, the RPF has remained alert and adaptive, effectively countering the constantly evolving methods used by traffickers.
As part of its nationwide initiative “Operation Narcos”, the RPF has significantly stepped up its efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking. In 2024, the force recorded its highest-ever narcotics seizures, valued at over Rs 220 crore, and arrested 1,388 traffickers. The momentum has continued in 2025, with seizures worth more than Rs 68 crore reported in the first four months alone—underscoring the success of coordinated, intelligence-led operations.
