Guwahati: For admissions under the Fee Waiver Scheme for the academic session 2025–26 in government and provincialized higher education institutions, a ration card will be mandatory to avail the benefits of the scheme.

The Department of Higher Education has partially modified it in an earlier office memorandum regarding the scheme and announced that only the ration card will be considered for determining eligibility under the Fee Waiver Scheme.

The notification stated, “If the student does not possess a ration card, the ration card of either parent shall be accepted for this purpose. Accordingly, the income certificate of the parents will no longer be considered a valid document for availing the benefits of the Fee Waiver Scheme.”

However, Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu in his X handle said, “I would like to clarify that during the free admission process into Government and Provincialized schools and colleges, ration cards will be accepted as valid proof of income. Alternatively, income certificates issued by a competent authority will also be accepted in place of a ration card, and vice versa.”
