Guwahati: Renowned Assamese poet, storyteller, and literary critic Anubhav Tulasi passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 67, following a brain stroke. He breathed his last at around 10 am at a private hospital in Guwahati, where he had been admitted late Monday night.
Tulasi was a towering figure in modern Assamese literature, celebrated not only for his profound poetry but also for his wide-ranging contributions as an editor, storyteller, and film critic. His creative journey, which began in the late 20th century, played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of contemporary Assamese writing.
A postgraduate in English Literature from Gauhati University (1984), Tulasi served as a professor at Swawal Kuchi Budharam Madhab Satradhikar College until his retirement in 2018. His debut poetry collection, Najma, launched a prolific literary career that included 20 poetry volumes and over 30 published books across genres.
Tulasi’s literary works are part of the curriculum at prestigious institutions including Gauhati University and Cotton University. His poems have also featured in notable national and international publications such as those by Oxford University Press, Penguin, Sahitya Akademi, and the National Book Trust. His writings have been translated into multiple languages, including German, French, Hungarian, and Uzbek, expanding his influence far beyond regional borders.
Throughout his illustrious career, Tulasi represented Assam at prominent literary festivals in Istanbul, Austin, Athens, and Dhaka, further establishing himself as a global literary voice. He was the recipient of several prestigious honours, including the Munin Barkotoki Award, a senior fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, and literary awards from the Axam Xahitya Xabha.
The news of his demise has sent shockwaves across the Assamese literary community and beyond. Condolences have poured in from writers, scholars, students, and admirers of his work. Tulasi’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of readers and writers in Assam and around the world.
