Guwahati: Cybercrime in Guwahati has reached alarming levels, with a sharp rise in financial fraud cases reported in 2024. According to data from the Pan Bazar Cyber Police Station, 821 financial fraud cases were registered in 2024, a significant increase compared to just 131 cases in 2023.

With increasing reliance on digital technology, cybercriminals have found new ways to exploit unsuspecting victims. Authorities warn that in 2025, Guwahati residents must be particularly cautious of emerging cyber threats such as cyberbullying, cyberstalking, online job fraud, cyber grooming, child pornography or Child Sexually Abusive Material (CSAM), phishing and vishing, sextortion, and honey traps.

As criminals refine their tactics, both individuals and institutions remain vulnerable to cyber fraud. Law enforcement agencies urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Experts emphasise the importance of adopting strong cyber hygiene practices to protect personal and financial information.

In the face of rising digital threats, Guwahati must strengthen its cybersecurity awareness and response mechanisms to ensure a safer digital environment in 2025 and beyond.
