GUWAHATI: As Guwahati gears up to celebrate Magh Bihu, the rising prices of Meji structures and other festive essentials have become a major concern for residents. The cost of readymade Meji structures, an integral part of the festival, ranges from Rs. 700 to Rs. 2,200, depending on size and location. This significant price hike has left many residents worried, with some expressing frustration over the government’s inaction in controlling prices.

Speaking to The Sentinel, a resident of Rukminigaon said, “People like us need to think a thousand times before buying. Prices of everything are increasing, and the government has done nothing to control this.” Another resident from Six Mile criticized the exploitation of urban buyers, stating, “Shopkeepers know city residents have no other option, and since the government doesn’t intervene, they exploit us. Every year, Meji prices double. Soon, other Bihu market items will also become unaffordable for middle-class families.”

The rising prices are not limited to Meji structures alone. Essential items for Bihu celebrations, such as pitha, ladoo, doi, and chira, have also seen significant price hikes, further straining household budgets.

Residents are calling on authorities to intervene and regulate prices to ensure that the traditional celebrations remain accessible to all. As the festive season approaches, the increasing cost of Bihu essentials threatens to overshadow the joy of the occasion for many in Guwahati.
