Guwahati: Thieves arrested, legal proceedings initiated

Basistha Police cracked a robbery case within just six hours of the incident.

GUWAHATI: Basistha Police cracked a robbery case within just six hours of the incident. The investigation effectively combined technical surveillance methods with traditional intelligence gathering. Three suspects were arrested from Beltola Bazar in connection with the case. The arrested individuals have been identified as Abdul Kalam (34), a resident of Bahari; Dinesh Mondal (57), from Swadesh Nagar, Basistha; and Rodikul Islam, alias Badshah (36), from Mayong.

During the arrest, police recovered Rs. 44,500 in cash and a stolen Oppo smartphone from the accused. The trio had robbed a passenger from Jiribam, Manipur, snatching Rs. 48,000 from his bag while he was travelling aboard a public bus at Basistha Chariali. The arrested individuals are believed to be involved in multiple incidents of snatching and pickpocketing, particularly on public buses across the city. A further probe is underway, and legal proceedings have been initiated against them. In another incident, a team from Dispur Police Station arrested two individuals involved in a series of retail crimes. The arrested individuals have been identified as Bedanta Krishna Saikia (25), a resident of Cherekapar in Sivasagar, and Sanjay Koiri (25), from Borpool in Jorhat Sadar. A significant quantity of stolen merchandise was recovered from their possession, including shoes, wristwatches, clothing, and various other items. Police officials confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against the two accused as further investigation continues.
