GUWAHATI: In a bid to ensure road safety in the run-up to Christmas and New Year, the Guwahati Transport Department and city police have intensified surprise checks across the city to curb drunk driving. The proactive drive, which began in key locations such as GS Road, has resulted in several four-wheelers and motorcyclists being penalized for violating traffic rules, particularly for driving under the influence of alcohol. To further strengthen enforcement, the Transport Department plans to introduce stricter measures, including the use of breath analysers to detect drunk driving. In addition to cracking down on drunk driving, the department is also set to introduce new guidelines for picnics, aiming to strike a balance between festivity and safety.
