Guwahati: In a bid to ensure safer road transportation, the Transport Department of the Kamrup Metropolitan District has launched an exceptional initiative, declaring March as "Public Service Month."
Officials will visit homes and offices to resolve vehicle documentation-related issues on the spot during this month.
Recent observations reveal that many accident victims fail to receive insurance or government compensation due to improper vehicle documentation. A significant number of vehicle owners either lack awareness of transportation laws or face time constraints. Many are unaware that vehicles become invalid if taxes and fees remain unpaid or if documents like registration, fitness certificates, permits, or pollution control certificates expire. Busy schedules also lead to oversight in renewing driving licenses and other crucial paperwork.
To address this, special teams from the District Transport Office will visit residences, offices, commercial establishments, and multinational enterprises on all working days in March to provide immediate solutions.
Gautam Das, a special duty officer of the Assam Transport Department, urged vehicle owners to update their documents promptly: "For safe travel, ensure your vehicle's documents are valid. Without proper paperwork, compensation for accidents-whether for yourself or third parties-will be denied, jeopardising road safety for all." Das emphasised that mechanically sound vehicles with valid documents are the cornerstone of safe transportation. The department also appealed to all vehicle owners to clear pending taxes and fees by March 31, contributing to the state's development as responsible citizens.
