Guwahati: The daily commute for thousands in Guwahati has become increasingly difficult due to unregulated bus fares and the non-issuance of tickets. This lack of transparency in public transport is leaving passengers vulnerable to overcharging, sparking growing frustration and raising concerns about accountability in the system. Commuters have reported that bus conductors frequently collect fares arbitrarily without providing tickets. A regular traveller shared their ordeal, saying, "The fare seems to vary depending on the conductor's mood. For the same route, they sometimes charge Rs 40, and at other times, more. When we ask for tickets, they claim the ticket machine isn't working."

The problem is particularly challenging for working professionals and students who depend on buses for their daily travel.

A college student said, "I travel to college by bus every day, and most conductors refuse to issue tickets. If I demand one, they either overcharge me or argue."

Acknowledging the issue, a senior official from the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) told this reporter, "We are aware of such complaints, and the issue of unregulated fares is being investigated. Commuters can lodge complaints by calling our toll-free number if conductors overcharge or refuse to issue tickets."

While ASTC has promised action, passengers are demanding stricter measures to ensure accountability and fairness in the public transport system. Many believe immediate reforms are necessary to safeguard commuters' rights and restore confidence in the service.
