GUWAHATI: On the eve of World Environment Day, the Transport Department has appealed to vehicle owners to combat alarming levels of air pollution caused by vehicular emissions.

Highlighting the severe threat posed by recent air pollution to our environment and living beings, Gautam Das, special duty officer of the Transport Department, stated that air pollution has become one of the leading causes of death in India. “The primary source of air pollution in our cities and towns is vehicular emissions,” Das emphasized. “Therefore, preventing air pollution is now the moral responsibility of all citizens.”

Das explained that by being mindful of our lifestyles and responsibilities towards the natural environment, vehicular air pollution can be reduced. He specifically advocated for increased tree planting in high-traffic areas, including city bus stands, roadsides, road dividers, public commercial establishments, and educational institutions. “Creating a greener environment through tree plantation and nurturing will protect future generations, as trees continuously absorb carbon dioxide and provide pure oxygen,” he stated. The senior official called upon all vehicle users to plant as many trees as possible within their capacity.

Additionally, Das outlined key measures to reduce pollution: regularly testing vehicle fuel and cooling systems within stipulated timeframes, ensuring engines do not emit black smoke, avoiding unnecessary honking, and reducing noise intensity.

Ahead of World Environment Day, Das urged all vehicle owners to implement these pollution control measures immediately. He specifically appealed for owners to carry valid Pollution under Control (PUC) certificates while operating their vehicles.
