Guwahati: Renowned Assamese actor and director Mehtab Hussain passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 75. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Guwahati.
Hussain was a celebrated figure in Assamese cinema and television, gaining widespread recognition as the lead actor in Pulak Gogoi’s film Khoj. A pioneer in Assamese television, he also created Mitar Tita Mitha, the first-ever comedy serial in Assam, which aired on Doordarshan and became immensely popular.
Originally from Dibrugarh, Hussain later settled in Guwahati’s Chandmari, where he made notable contributions to the film industry. In addition to his artistic achievements, he was a successful entrepreneur.
He is survived by his elder brother, Dr. Zakir Hussain, a noted doctor and professor, as well as his wife, son, and daughter. Notably, he was Assam’s first graduate in tea science.
Hussain’s passing marks the loss of a prominent figure in Assam’s cultural and business landscape. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, expressed his grief, mourning the demise of such a distinguished personality. He acknowledged that Hussain’s contributions to the cultural sphere would always be remembered.
