Guwahati: The Department of English, Gauhati University, in collaboration with Dr Anita Baruah Sarmah College of Education, hosted the Eighteenth Anita Baruah Sarmah Memorial Lecture at the Phanidhar Datta Seminar Hall, where Devy shared reflections on language, memory, and change.

Professor Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor, inaugurated the event, highlighting the university’s ongoing efforts to preserve endangered languages. “Gauhati University is committed to preserving the linguistic diversity of Northeast India. We are actively documenting endangered languages and integrating indigenous knowledge into academic discourse,” he added.

Professor G.N. Devy’s address, “Before I Fall Silent: Half-Century Reflections on Language,” traced the evolution of communication, from the first civilisations to the present, where digital memory challenges human recollection.

Calling Guwahati a place of unfinished conversations, Devy recalled how Gauhati University became a crucial space for shaping the People’s Linguistic Survey of India. Choosing this city as the final stop in his lecture journey, he urged the audience to view language beyond political divides as a living, evolving force.
