Guwahati: Workshop on DPR preparations for flood protection concludes

Guwahati: In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening technical expertise in the Northeast, the North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI), under the Brahmaputra Board, successfully organized a five-day training workshop on “DPR Preparation for Flood Protection & Anti-Erosion (Module-I)” from July 22 to July 26.

The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the National Water Academy (NWA), Pune. The training was inaugurated virtually by D.S. Chaskar, Chief Engineer, NWA, Pune, in the presence of several key dignitaries, including Dr. Basanta Kr. Deka, Chief Engineer of the Brahmaputra Board; Asheesh Kumar Singhal, Director of NWA; and Dr. Ranjit Deka, Director of NEHARI.

The workshop focused on enhancing participants' skills in preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for flood management and anti-erosion measures. Sessions included vital topics such as guidelines for DPR preparation, cost estimation of flood management projects, appraisal processes using the e-PAMS Portal, design methodologies for embankments, spurs, RCC porcupine structures, and the application of the BRAHMA Model and GIS fundamentals.

Experts from organizations including Ganga Flood Control Commission (GFCC) Lucknow, Central Water Commission (CWC) Guwahati, National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) Guwahati, IIT Guwahati, and NWA Pune conducted both theoretical and practical sessions. These inputs were designed to equip engineers with the latest tools and practices for sustainable flood mitigation planning.

A special yoga session led by instructor Gitima Deka was also organized during the programme, promoting wellness and stress relief among participants.

The event concluded with a valedictory ceremony chaired by Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board, and attended by Dr. Bipul Talukdar, Principal of Assam Engineering College. Dr. Ranjit Deka highlighted the accomplishments of the workshop and emphasized the importance of continued learning.

A total of 29 participants from the Brahmaputra Board and Water Resources Departments of Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh attended the workshop, marking a collaborative effort to enhance regional resilience against floods and erosion.
