GUWAHATI: A daylong workshop on the utilization of solar energy in aquaculture was organized on Friday by the District Fisheries Department, Kamrup, at the PWRD Conference Hall in Amingaon. The event was held under the sponsorship of SELCO Foundation, a Bangalore-based non-profit organization known for promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The workshop focused on the potential of using solar power to enhance various operations within fish farms, including powering pumps, aerators, lighting systems, and automated feeders. Experts highlighted how adopting solar energy can significantly reduce operational costs, support environmental sustainability, and provide a more stable habitat for aquatic life.

The event witnessed the participation of 60 stakeholders, including government officials, fish farmers, cooperative members, and investors.

Kamrup District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra, addressing the gathering as the chief guest, emphasized that nearly 40% of total energy costs in aquaculture are attributed to electricity consumption. He underlined the importance of switching to renewable energy sources such as solar power to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly innovations in the sector. “Solar energy is one of the cleanest sources of power and holds immense potential for sustainable aquaculture,” he said.

Additional District Commissioner Kamal Barua expressed satisfaction with the district’s impressive growth in fish production, which now ranks third in Assam with an annual yield of 35,450 metric tonnes. He also noted that Kamrup leads the state in digital fish farmer registration, with 16,410 farmers registered so far.
