GUWAHATI: Although several water ATMs were set up by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) across the city under the Guwahati Smart City project, a large majority of them remain dysfunctional. Out of the handful that remain functional, many disperse only dirty water, and this has raised questions from citizens in different parts of the city. On being questioned about the non-functionality of these projects meant for dispersing potable water at very limited prices, the organisation mentioned that, as per the revenue model, the duty of maintenance lies with other organisations.
Meanwhile, citizens have raised questions regarding the expenditure of public funds on such non-functional projects. A concerned citizen mentioned, “If so much money is being spent on these facilities, why can’t they look into the proper functioning of these water ATMs. We are willing to make the payments for the facility, but it needs to stay functional. And if they cannot make these work, they should dismantle them and clear up the space that these projects are occupying.”
