Independence Day Celebrated in and Around the City

GUWAHATI: Independence Day was colourfully celebrated at various institutions and locations in the city commemorating the nation’s independence from the imperial rule on August 15.

Axom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) observed the day with a flag hoisting programme by President Parmananda Rajbongshi in the morning at its Guwahati office. A multi-lingual poetry seminar was organized in the evening which was attended by Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioners of India Shah Mohammad Tanveer Mansoor, who also participated in the programme. In his speech, he requested AXX to translate three prominent Assamese books into Bengali within three months.

State BJP celebrated the day with flag hoisting by party president Ranjit Kumar Dass in its head office followed by a colourful programme in the evening. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) observed the flag hoisting ceremony at Rajiv Bhawan by party president Ripun Bora followed by a day-long programme.

At Fancy Bazaar, the Ready-made Garment Dealer Association of Assam (RGDAA), celebrated the day with flag hoisting by AXX secretary-general Padum Rajkhowa. The association’s working president Subhroto Roy said that in the upcoming days, all the signboards of the shops in Fancy Bazaar will be written in Assamese. Don Bosco School, Panbazar, Guwahati too celebrated the Independence Day with a colourful programme at the school premises. Chief guest Shashank Shekhar Shastri, Managing Director of Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd. unfurled the Tricolour in presence of school Principal Fr. Sebastian Mathew, veteran Salesian Fr. CV George, Parish Priest Fr. Vincent Xalxo, Vice Principal Fr. PLM Joseph, students, school staff, NCC army, navy, scouts as well as parents and guardians.
