Independents win big in CUSU body elections in Guwahati

The elections for the students’ union body of Cotton University came to an end with the Rajani Kanta Bordoloi (RKB) Boys’ Hostel bagging the top positions of the body in the polls.

GUWAHATI: The elections for the students’ union body of Cotton University came to an end with the Rajani Kanta Bordoloi (RKB) Boys’ Hostel bagging the top positions of the body in the polls. Traditionally affiliated with the All Assam Students’ Union, an internal conflict led to the students from the RKB Boys’ Hostel contesting the polls as independent candidates. Himangshu Kumar Das was elected for the post of President; Javed Akhtar Qadri won the post of General Secretary; Akshayata Das was elected Vice President; and Gargi Sharma became the Assistant General Secretary.

It can be noted that Javed Akhtar Qadri bagged 982 votes to be named the General Secretary, defeating Gunjan Deka by just 49 votes. Akshayata Das secured a victory with 908 votes, surpassing Violina Borboruah, who got 831 votes for the Vice President position. The General Secretary, Gargi Sarma, achieved a win with 1,491 votes, beating Siba Basumatary. Debating and Symposium Secretary Ankita Sarma Bordoloi defeated Sagarika Baruah. Mamrez Ali was elected Boys’ Common Room Secretary, while Srinjana Sharma was elected Editor. Karan Sharma bagged the position of Cricket Secretary. A total of 2,469 students cast their votes for this election.
