GUWAHATI: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has organizing a special programme for school children called the 'Young Scientist Programme', or 'Yuva Vigyani Karyakram' (YUVIKA), from the year 2019.
According to press communiqué, the next edition of the programme is scheduled to be held in May. The programme is primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on Space Technology, Space Science and Space Applications to the younger students with a preference to rural areas. The programme is aimed at creating awareness about the emerging trends in science and technology amongst the youngsters, who are the future building blocks of the nation.
ISRO has chalked out this programme to "Catch them young". The programme is also expected to encourage more students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-based research/career. The YUVIKA 2022 residential programme will be of two weeks' duration from May 16 to May 28 and the schedule will include talks, sharing of experience by the eminent scientists, experimental demonstrations, facility and lab visits, exclusive sessions for discussions with experts, practicals and feedback sessions. The programme aims to select 150 students across the country who are studying in Class-IX as on March 1 in any school in India.
The Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of Assam, has been entrusted with the responsibility to ensure a healthy participation of students from Assam. The programme is planned at five centres of ISRO. Towards the end of the programme, students will be taken to visit of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. Expenditure towards the travel of student along with one guardian/parent for dropping and picking up of students from the reporting centre with certain guidelines, course material, lodging and boarding etc., during the entire course will be borne by ISRO.
