GUWAHATI: Assam’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Ashok Singhal, today convened a virtual meeting with all deputy commissioners and co-district commissioners to review the preparations for the upcoming International Yoga Day 2025. This year’s International Yoga Day, observed globally on June 21 — the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere — will revolve around the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”. The state-level celebration will take place at Salbari in Baksa district.
Additionally, district and co-district-level programmes will be organised across all 35 districts and co-district headquarters of the state. The events will feature yoga demonstrations, awareness drives, cultural performances, and yoga competitions. Schools, colleges, panchayats, and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will play a crucial role in involving the general public at the grassroots level. To strengthen international cooperation, yoga programmes will be held at iconic global landmarks under Yoga Bandhan through partnerships with ten countries. Yoga competitions based on the Common Yoga Protocol will be held in four different age groups. These will be conducted under the supervision of the deputy commissioners and coordinated by district AYUSH nodal officers, AYUSH officials, and NGOs. All participants will receive certificates, and winners will be felicitated by local dignitaries on the celebration day.
Singhal emphasised that yoga should not be limited to just one day but be practised daily. He urged the district officials to promote yoga as an essential part of daily life through awareness campaigns. He stated that the celebration should not remain a routine event but be transformed into a popular festival with active participation from all sections of society. The minister also called for close collaboration with educational institutions, security forces, NCC, NSS, local bodies, NGOs, and yoga organisations to ensure inclusive participation across all age groups and communities. He further called for a widespread awareness campaign through print, digital, and electronic media to promote the regular practice of yoga. The meeting was also attended by Dr. P. Ashok Babu, Commissioner-Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, and the Director of AYUSH Mission, Assam.
