GUWAHATI: In an encounter with the Dispur police a member of the infamous 'Irani' group was injured on Friday night. The encounter happened when the person — identified as Amar Gowala — tried to escape from the police team. The police were leading him to identify the place of the snatched money.
DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) — East, Subrajyoti Bora told 'The Sentinel', "On December 15, 2021, the Dispur police registered a money-snatching case. An employee of the GMC (Guwahati Municipality Corporation) was taking the money (Rs 3.35 lakh) in a bag to deposit the cash in the bank. As the GMC employee, in a bike, was proceeding to the bank, four persons in two motorcycles accosted him at the Super Market point here. A member of the 'Irani' group even threatened the GMC employee with a pistol. Later, the pistol turned out to be a toy. Then a member of the group snatched the bag containing the money.
"The Dispur police arrested Amar Goala from Lakhtokia in the city."
The DCP added, "The four-member 'Irani' group is from the Fatapukur area of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. They are from the same village.
"On Friday night, the police team was taking Amar Goala to locate the spot — which he had earlier confessed to the police during interrogation — as the place where the 'Irani' group members used to keep the snatched money.
"As the vehicle — with the police team along with Gowala — reached the backside of Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, he tried to escape taking advantage of the darkness. While attempting to flee, he pushed two policemen. As a result, the police personnel got injured. Though police warned him several times not to flee, Goala did not listen. Finally, the police had to open two rounds of fire. A bullet hit Goala on his right leg.
"Police admitted Goala and also the two injured police personnel in the GMCH (Guwahati Medical College & Hospital)."
The police use the term 'Irani' for the people who snatch items.
