GUWAHATI: The Journalist Association for Assam (JAFA) on Sunday conferred the JAFA Achievers Award-2021 on total 27 media persons, administrative officers, police officers and doctors.
The award winners in various categories are – Journalism: Jitendra Kumar Chowdhury (Dainik Asom), Mousamjyoti Baishya (The Sentinel), Chaya Moni Bhuyan (NewsLive), Dhurbajyoti Pathak (Asomiya Pratidin), and Nayan Prartim Kumar (Pratidin Time); photojournalist Altab Ali (UB Photos); news anchor Geetashree Talukdar (News18 Asom Northeast); video journalism: Pradip Barman (DY365); Young Editor for Print Media: Niloy Paul (Bengali daily Prantajyoti); Peace & Prosperity: Longsing Teron (Karbi daily Khekar); Dr Dibyajyoti Saikia for Gallantry Works Towards Human Rights; Entrepreneurship: Arjed Saharia; Social Service: Tushar Paul; Medical Service: Dr Abhijit Sarma (Superintendent GMCH); Police Service: Rosy Kalita, SP (CM Vigilance); Public Administration: Adil Khan (Transport Commissioner); Youth Politician: Jibesh Ray (BJP).
The award was also conferred on 10 rural journalists. They are Kushal Saikia of Lakhimpur, Gautam Kumar Kakati of Morigaon, Tarun Das of Duni, Sithilar Krishna Barman of Kokrajhar, Arun Sarma of Kalaigaon (The Sentinel), Uttam Kumar Barman of Bongaigaon, Arun Lokthe of Karbi Anglong, Imdad Ali of Jorhat, Sunil Kumar Sarma of Bijni and Prakash Paudel of Baksa, Naukata.
Attending the award function held in the city, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Dr Numal Momin said, "Journalism is not an easy job. By gathering correct information, the right news must be given to people." He lamented that nowadays, positive news is not highlighted much. "Focus should be on highlighting positive news as positive news help build the society. People should also take interest in positive news. Negative news harms society," he said and added, "Crime-related news should be dealt with sensitivity. Crime news should not be published in such a way that others get encouraged to commit crime."
State Panchayat and Rural Development, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass lauded JAFA for honouring people from various fields, besides journalists. He urged journalists to work sincerely. "I worked as a journalist in the rural level. When journalists do their job sincerely, they get self-satisfaction and this self-satisfaction, in turn, satisfies the soul," he said.
The award function was presided over by JAFA president Abhideep Choudhury and was attended by many journalists.
