GUWAHATI: The Kamrup District Committee of the Assam Press Correspondents' Union (APCU) and the Journalist Association For Assam (JAFA) Kamrup (M) District remembered the first martyr journalist of the state, Kamala Saikia, on his 32nd death anniversary on Wednesday. Bhabesh Saikia, the founder president of the Assam Press Correspondents' Union (APCU), who died on Monday, was also remembered at this event organized on the premises of the Dispur Press Club.
Floral tributes were offered to both journalists, and lamps were lit in their memory during this memorial function. The event started with speeches by Journalist Union of Assam (JUA) central committee president and news editor of Dainik Agradoot Semim Sultana Ahmed, senior journalist of Axomiya Pratidin and the president of the Assam Legislative Assembly Press Reporters' Committee, Bhaben Dutta. Executive editor of Axomiya Khobor Biswajit Das, treasurer of Assam Photojournalists Union Dhaniram Kalita, working president of APCU Mousamjyoti Baishya, and general secretary of the JAFA Central Committee Kunjamohon Roy were also part of the event, along with several other senior journalists and media workers.
The dignitaries called upon the journalists to maintain unity and dignity in their work while underscoring the power of the media as the fourth pillar of democracy. They also spoke regarding the need for the safety and security of the journalists working day in and day out in the field. They also demanded that the state government fast-track the investigations related to violence against the journalists registered at different police stations across the state.
