GUWAHATI: Since February 15 this year the employees engaged in NRC update works in the five revenue circles in Kamrup (M) district have no holiday, be them Sundays, second or fourth Saturdays, Bihu or other occasions when they used to get holidays.

Since February 15 this year, the hearing of claims and objections has been underway in the district along with rest of the State. So much so that while the male employees have to work till midnight, their female counterparts work till 10 pm so as to give the State an error-free NRC.

Talking to The Sentinel, an official said: “As many as 48 officials, including ten females, have been working in Guwahati Revenue Circle. In all the five revenue circles in the district, one each at Guwahati, Dispur, Sonapur, Azara and Chandrapur, around 140 officials have been working. Each of NRC teams comprises the DRCR (District Registrar of Citizens’ Registration), a CRCR (Circle Registrar of Citizens’ Registration) and DOs (Disposing Officers), assisting officers in staff, authorized officers and ACRCRs (additional CRCRs).” An official working in Guwahati Revenue Circle said that he has been away from his family members for the past six months. “We can’t even take care of if our names have figured in the NRC or not. We have to work relentlessly so as to ensure that the people of Assam get a correct NRC,” he said.

Another official said that under Guwahati Revenue Circle around 50,000 NRC applicants claimed for the inclusion of their names in the NRC. He said that the Guwahati revenue circle has the highest number of claimants among the five revenue circle offices in the district. “Now we’re giving final touches. We’re racing against the time so as to complete the task within the stipulated period,” he said.
