GUWAHATI: The 34-hour mass hunger strike called by the Liberal Democratic Party, Assam demanding scrapping of the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act-2019) ended on Sunday at Chachal. Representatives of various organizations, including the NCP, CPI, CPI (M), KMSS, CPI (ML) and many others, extended their support to the this strike. They said that the movement against the CAA will continue.

Talking to The Sentinel, Liberal Democratic Party president Guna Gogoi said, “We sat on hunger strike from 6 am on Saturday. Our strike is against the CAA. The government is hatching conspiracies to quell the protests going on against the Act. It has started the politics of divide and rule.” Gogoi further said that people from every walk of life are raising their voice against the CAA and the government must bow their heads in front of the public by cancelling the Act. “We’ll never fall in the trap of the government in the days ahead. The government has totally nullified the Assam Accord. Now they’re indulging in the politics of division by announcing different schemes, grants and so on to lure people,” said Gogoi.

Also participating in the hunger strike, state general secretary of Liberal Student Union Dr Abid Ahmed said, “The harsh truth is that we all have fallen prey to the enchanting word of our Prime Minister and the devilish political cobweb spun by the Home Minister. We’ve elected the government hoping for a solution to the issue of illegal immigrants, but our hopes backfired. I appeal to every Assamese to continue to raise voice against the injustice, false hopes and also the injustice to martyrs of the Assam agitation.”
