GUWAHATI: Sambalpur police have arrested Uttam Paswan, the main suspect involved in the daring daylight robbery at the Mannapuram Gold Finance office in Budharaja on January 3. He was arrested in Guwahati, Assam, where he had been hiding. Uttam is believed to have coordinated the entire heist.
In a statement to the media on Wednesday, Himanshu Kumar Lal, the IG of the Northern Range, said the police are questioning Uttam and plan to take him into remand for further investigation. Efforts are still underway to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the stolen goods.
The arrest follows weeks of investigation, which faced delays and slow progress. So far, the police have not recovered the stolen valuables. Earlier, on January 16, two other suspects, Pankaj Paswan and Ajaya Paswan, were arrested in Hazipur, Bihar.
During questioning, Pankaj revealed information that led to the recovery of a country-made pistol and live ammunition from his rented house in Sambalpur. Reports suggest that four to five more individuals were involved in the robbery.
Police had previously identified two criminals, Subodh Singh and Pallu Singh, who are imprisoned in Bihar and West Bengal, as the masterminds behind the crime.
The robbery occurred at around 11 am on January 3, when the criminals stole approximately 30 kg of gold and Rs. 4 lakh in cash without raising any alarm.
