MGNREGA Work: Assam puts up poor show!

GUWAHATI: Assam continues to put up a poor show in implementing works and schemes under the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) since its inception with as many as 1,61,258 works still lying incomplete.

According to information obtained from the Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) Department, not a single penny has been spent on as many as 24,634 works since inception till October 25, 2019. This is not all. Not a single penny has been spent on 24,652 works for the past three years, on 27,606 works for the past two years and on 44,405 works for the past one year.

According to the data released, the poorest performance has been recorded in Cachar district with 14,235 pending works. It is followed by Karimganj with 11,997 pending works, Karbi Anglong with 9,169 pending works, Baksa with 8,925 pending works, Barpeta with 8,752 pending works, Dhubri with 6,730 pending works, Golaghat with 7,385 pending works, Kamrup with 6,704 pending works, Udalguri with 6,482 pending works and Kokrajhar with 5,085 pending works.

With most of the Central and State government schemes like PMGSY, PMAY (Gramin), the scheme for construction of toilets, tree plantation, digging ponds etc being implemented through it, the MGNREGA holds the key for rural development. Apart from works under all such schemes, many other works are being done through the MGNREGA.
