GUWAHATI: Already burdened with severe water crunch since months, the residents who receive water under Zoo Road Supply Water Scheme are in for more dilemmas for the next four days. Water supply will cease from August 8 to 11 in Zoo Road, Ganeshguri, Christian Basti, Rajgarh, Rukminigaon, Sreenagar, Tarun Nagar, Ambikagiri Nagar, Hengrabari, Roop Nagar, Japorigog, Bhaskar Nagar, Sarumotoria and Jatiya.
According to officials, there are a total of 7154 connections under the Zoo Road Supply Water Scheme. There used to be four raw water pumps that supplied water to these connections. Two among these pumps were completely damaged since a long time and is beyond repair. There were two working pumps one of which was recently damaged. These pumps can withhold a total of 5000 connections but since the number is larger, the water pressure is moderately weak. Moreover, parts of the pumps need to be changed after running for 5000 hours. As this was not carried out, the cease in water supply is to make repairs in the pumps.
The notice was issued by Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewage Board on Thursday. In this regard, Kamrup (M) DC Biswajeet Pegu said, “The cease in water supply is to carry out repair works so that people are relieved from the daily shortage in water supply. As such, I request everyone to bear with the situation and support the initiative. I also urge upon the people to store ample water to make it through the four days and with the one working raw water pump, water will be supplied in ratios.”
