GUWAHATI: The family of Dr Triguna Sen, freedom fighter and eminent educationist, has urged the government to roll back the godown project undertaken by the Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) at Maizgram in Karimganj – the birthplace of Dr Sen.
Talking to media persons in the city on Tuesday, Arup Sen, a relative of Dr Sen, said, "Dr Triguna Sen was the first individual from India who officially backed the East Pakistan Freedom Struggle in the Union cabinet on April 6, 1971. He was the prime mover and architect of breaking Pakistan into two parts – a decision which consequently helped to protect Northeast India, especially Assam."
He further said, "Local ignorant leaders are defaming the pride and prestige of Dr Triguna Sen by making a godown in his birthplace. We want to build a super speciality hospital in memory of Dr Sen on his land in PPP mode. Hence, we urge the Chief Minister to take steps to roll back the godown project and build a super speciality hospital instead, in memory of Dr Triguna Sen."
Dr Triguna Sen joined the Jadavpur University as the founder Vice-Chancellor in 1955-65. Later, he became the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. In 1965 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. He was made the Union cabinet minister for Education, Petroleum, Chemical, Mine and Minerals on the recommendation of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In 1968, he formulated the first Education Policy of India.
Dr Triguna Sen went into oblivion from the year 1975 to 1984 after his successful tenure as a Union Minister. He passed away on January 11, 1998.
