GUWAHATI: The City Police has found lapses on the part of the security agency leading to the looting of Rs 40 lakh in front of the Guwahati branch of the Federal Bank on MG Road near Fancy Bazar police outpost here on Tuesday. Two security personnel, a driver and the gunman of the security agency have been arrested by the police for their lapses. Following an FIR lodged by the manager of the bank branch, a case (599/19 u/s 392 IPC) has also been registered at Panbazar police station.

The gunman of the security agency, Bhabesh Kalita (32) hailing from Haribhanga in Tihu was on leave on Tuesday. In the absence of the gunman, the security personnel should have sought security from the local police or the bank authority to carry such a huge amount. However, they informed neither the police nor the bank authority of the absence of their gunman and tried to transfer the cash, a police source said. Driver Balaram Nonia (40), the gunman Bhabesh Kalita and two others – Jackyfar Rahman (27) and Tapas Bose (30), both hailing from Railway Colony, Bamunimaidam – have been arrested. They were produced before the court that sent them to four-day police custody.

The two personnel of M/s Visual Securas Ltd and their driver withdrew Rs 40 lakh from Federal Bank’s Silpukhuri branch earlier on Tuesday. They carried the cash in a bag. They came to the bank’s branch at Fancy Bazar and withdrew Rs 80 lakh. The amount was kept in a trunk. While the two personnel of Visual Securas Ltd were carrying the trunk with Rs 80 lakh, the driver was holding the bag containing Rs 40 lakh. When the two personnel were loading the trunk to their Maruti van (AS01DC0855), the driver was moving to his seat with the bag. The very moment four persons in two motorcycles came from behind and snatched the bag with the cash from the driver’s hand, and fled.
