GUWAHATI: Amid incessant rainfall, the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam (PSSA) observed Black Day in protest against the brutality faced by the differently abled during their protest on October 5, 2018.

According to PSSA, a massive protest was staged at Dispur Lastgate in support of their prolonged demands on October 5, 2018. Many protestors were injured due to a police charge to disperse them. During that police charge, the president of PSSA, Prasanna Sarma, was severely injured and is still bedridden.

PSSA general secretary Nripen Malakar said, “On October 5, the Sangstha submitted a memorandum to the then Chief Minister and chief secretary urging to investigate the matter of the police personnel involved in the atrocities against differently abled people during the protest, but no such results came out. On October 10, 2018, I registered a case at the State Human Rights Commission against the incident that happened in Dispur Lastgate but still showed no progress.”

Malakar further added that the National Human Rights Defenders Alert also registered a case and asked the then DCP of the Crime Branch to investigate the matter, but no results came out. At that time, the then Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities wrote a letter to the Central Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, but the results are yet to be declared, or, I can say, never declared.”

“On the other hand, the state police accountability commission registered a case on the same but still did not get any answer regarding the atrocity faced by differently abled people. We will continue to observe Black Day until justice is served to the person with disabilities who faced the brutality by the police personnel.”
