GUWAHATI: The Prerana IASOWA Guwahati Marathon 2025 set a new benchmark in marathon organization. As the first-ever AIMS-certified full marathon in the region, the event not only brought professional-level running to the city but also catered to diverse fitness needs through its multiple race categories.

The event featured four categories to ensure inclusivity for all fitness levels: the Joy Walk (5KM) for families and beginners, the City Run (10KM) for casual and amateur runners, the Half Marathon (21.1KM) for those seeking a test of endurance, and the Full Marathon (42.2KM), the ultimate challenge for professional athletes.

The excitement began at dawn at the iconic Sarusajai Sports Complex, which buzzed with energy as runners, spectators, and supporters created an electrifying atmosphere. Throughout the marathon, hydration stations, live music, and cheering crowds along the route ensured an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The event was hosted by the rising Assamese musician Arghadeep Barua, who added to the high-energy vibe of the day. For years, passionate runners from Assam had to travel to other cities to participate in full marathons. This marathon was a game-changer, allowing local runners to compete at an international standard event in their own city. The half marathon was initiated by the Minister of Sports & Youth Welfare, Nandita Garlosa. The 10 km run saw Chief Secretary of Assam, Dr. Ravi Kota, waving the flag, while the 5 km joy run/walk was set in motion by DGP Assam, Harmeet Singh.

With a meticulous focus on runner convenience, the event ensured well-marked routes, secure roads, and adequate hydration points. En route amenities included well-equipped hydration points, toilets, medical assistance, enthusiastic volunteer support, followed by a structured post-run recovery food distribution. These thoughtful arrangements made it a flawless experience for both amateur and seasoned runners.

The spirit of inclusivity was evident in every aspect of the marathon. One of the most heartwarming moments was witnessing a four-year-old child completing the 5 km joy walk, hand in hand with an elder sibling. Senior runners, aged over 70, also participated with unwavering enthusiasm, showcasing that age is no barrier to fitness. A visually blind runner, who has inspired many, was heard saying that it was his vision to run in his city. The marathon truly became a symbol of inclusivity, uniting people from all walks of life.

The event’s success was made possible through strong partnerships that played a key role in supporting the marathon. The running community of the region also came out in high numbers to cheer for this initiative, which is well on its way to becoming the most awaited fitness event of every year. The energy was high, the people were active, and the ambiance was electric, making the marathon an unforgettable celebration.

The marathon was a collaborative effort between Prerana IAS Officers’ Wives Association (IASOWA) and Paper Mache Pvt. Ltd., ensuring top-notch organization. Prerana IASOWA, established in 1989, played a crucial role not just as title sponsors but also in the meticulous planning and execution of the event.

When asked, Nirmala Kota and Anjali Tirkey, the president and secretary of Prerana IASOWA, said that they measured the success of the event by the satisfaction of the runners, who are the heroes of the occasion. It also gave an opportunity to be a part of the culture of fitness and sportsmanship and diversity that the state and the NE region as a whole inspire. And certainly, the participants had wonderful words to say about the marathon, which witnessed over 3000 people participating in the event. The event’s success was further fuelled by strong corporate backing. The group of sponsors included Presenting Partner: Coal India Ltd, Powering Partner: Vantage Circle, Gold Partners: Star Cement Pvt. Ltd., Indian Oil, Oil India Ltd. Silver Partners: ONGC, Numaligarh Refinery, Tata Electronics

With its flawless execution, world-class facilities, and enthusiastic participation, the Prerana IASOWA Guwahati Marathon 2025 has established itself as a landmark event for the region. This marathon has not just been a race but a movement—bringing the running culture to the heart of Assam and setting an example for how marathons should be organized, a press release said.
