Government seeks two weeks' time to file response

GUWAHATI: The State Government has sought two weeks' time to inform the Gauhati High Court about the steps taken to protect the wildlife and environment in Gita Mandir Hill.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL/52/2021) was filed in the court by Dwijen Bhattacharya and Rajesh Sarma highlighting certain issues of great importance related to the environment, like illegal felling of trees and protection of wildlife, including endangered species, in the area of Gita Mandir Hill, which is situated in the middle of Guwahati city.
While hearing the PIL, Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Malasri Nandi said, "Accordingly, we are of the view that proper response by the authorities portraying the present condition in the area of Gita Mandir Hill so as to protect the environment will be necessary."
PN Goswami, the Additional Advocate General, Assam, sought two weeks' time to file a comprehensive affidavit indicating the present situation in Gita Mandir Hill which will also include the various measures which the government may take or proposes to take to save the wildlife environment and greeneries of Gita Mandir Hills situated in the midst of the cosmopolitan city of Guwahati.
The next court hearing will be on December 8, 2021.
