GUWAHATI: The members of the New Engineering and Polytechnic Faculty Association of Assam (NEPFAA) protested outside the Directorate of Technical Education in Guwahati on Wednesday, highlighting multiple demands from their side.

NEPFAA comprises part-time lecturers, 3F lecturers, and assistant lecturers who had been engaged in 16 polytechnics and 3 engineering colleges in the state during 2017 and 2021. They submitted a memorandum to the education minister of Assam via the director of technical education after the protest. It is important to note that the Assam Engineering Service Recruitment Board was constituted for the selection of teachers in the technical institutions of Assam. In February 2023, they published an advertisement for the positions of lecturers and assistant lecturers. Following this, a written examination is scheduled for April 24.

Some of the key points in their memorandum included demands for job security for the contractual staff who have been serving since the inception of these organisations. The organisation called for no new appointments until some assurance is given to the existing teachers serving in contractual positions, mentioning that these institutions depend on their services but their positions have not been regularised yet. The protestors also mentioned that the state government has not provided any support to the people who were originally appointed to these institutions in the state.
