GUWAHATI: The Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) has been installed in various parts of the city for the smooth operation of the traffic system and passing vehicles without any interruption. But this has posed a problem when the ITMS is non-functional or not in use. Residents are urging to look into this matter, as the ITMS doesn't seem to be functional. Frustration mounded among the roads as commuters got stuck in traffic for more than an hour.
According to sources, the Lastgate ITMS seems to not be in use, and traffic congestion is more prevalent in that area as vehicles throng from the secretariat as well as Beltola. As well as the Rajdhani Masjid area, where there is huge congestion at times, it does not work. So, there should be traffic control personnel.
According to one commuter, "Though in Guwahati we are asked to maintain a speed limit, no one follows it, and as a result, they have to face certain consequences. Vehicles come from every direction without following a proper route or direction and cause accidents."
Another said, "In the Ulubari or Six Mile area, there are traffic personnel who control the vehicles, which is much needed in many signals, as in case the ITMS are not functional or not in use, they are the most helpful. Manual personnel are much needed as vehicles are thronged anyhow and cause accidents."
According to officials, "the traffic congestion in Guwahati is increasing each day as there is road construction, with an increase in private vehicles and others. We are deploying people in every sphere and working for the safety of the people. We do get complaints from the public, but at times we lack manpower. We are trying our best to get more manpower and work for the safety of people."
