Raid at Fancy Bazaar by Food and Safety Department Kamrup, seizes chemically ripened fruits

GUWAHATI: The Food and Safety Department Kamrup (M) conducted a raid at Fancy Bazaar on Friday and seized 22.5 quintal of mangoes and 2 quintal of papayas. The fruits were recovered from a warehouse belonging to a fruit stall owner, one Binod Das. According to the officials, the fruits were artificially ripened with the use of carbide, which is a harsh chemical that aids in the quick ripening of fruits but poses various health hazards. The fruits were later destroyed.
