GUWAHATI: The State Government is considering reorganization of development blocks and creation of new ones under the Panchayat & Rural Development Department.

The move is being planned because the population has increased considerably since the existing development blocks were constituted. There are 219 development blocks in Assam at present, which are headed by the respective Block Development Officers (BDOs), who monitor and implement all works under the gaon panchayats. Some Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) have one Block Development Office, while others have two such offices.
