GUWAHATI: In his scathing attack on the BJP-led government at Dispur, Congress’ Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque has said that the present government in the State has done precious little for the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) from centrally-sponsored schemes.

Addressing the media at Dispur Press Club here on Saturday, Khaleque said, “The State government has failed to bring any hostel of the centrally-sponsored Babu Jagjivan Ram Chatraniwas Yojana for the SCs of the State. Likewise, it has failed to bring any of the Centrally-sponsored Ekalabya Model Schools to the STs of the State.”

On the decision for closing Sanskrit Tols and Madrassas in the State, Khaleque said, “This is unfortunate at a time when the Centre has taken a decision to declare three Sanskrit deemed universities as Central Universities the State government is closing Sanskrit Tols. Likewise, the decision to close government-run Madrassas will lead to the setting up of more Khariji Madrassas (privately-run Madrassas), and that will go against the government’s policy of modernization of Madrassa education and the move will come to a standstill.”

Khaleque extended his moral support to the demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Assam, and any move for the development of the indigenous Muslims of the State. “I want the government to give ST status to the indigenous Muslims in Assam,” he said.
