GUWAHATI: Seven fraudsters were arrested by the Dispur police on Sunday night after they were caught red-handed while preparing fake appointment letters at the DB Lodge at Borbari here.

The arrested persons have been identified as Nayan Saikia (Kahilipara), Sirajul Haque (Mangaldai), Gobinda Choudhury (Nalbari), Nur Islam Ahmed (Nalbari), Pranjal Burman (Nalbari), Jayanta Deka (Basistha) and Jayanta Das (Goalpara). A case (2087/22 u/s 120(B)/420/468/471 IPC) has been registered at the Dispur Police Station. Of those arrested, Jayanta Das is a computer operator.

The arrested persons were produced in court on Monday. While Nayan Saikia, Gobinda Choudhury, Nur Islam Ahmed and Jayanta Deka were remanded to judicial custody, Jayanta Das, Sirajul Haque and Pranjal Burman were remanded to three days' police custody.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Sudhakar Singh, the accused persons were scanned versions of officials seals to prepare the fake appointment letters. He said that the fraudsters were luring candidates on the basis of an ongoing matter regarding recruitment of muster roll workers in the Water Resources Department in the Gauhati High Court by saying that they are the principal litigants and they are in a position to secure appointment for candidates of their choice.

Their bank passbooks have been seized and the police will examine their recent transactions for more information, the DCP said.

He said that the incident has no connection with the ongoing process for recruitment to Grade-III and Grade-IV posts under the State Government.
