SONAPUR: An eviction drive resumed today in Kochutali, Sonapur, after a seven-month hiatus, as authorities aim to remove illegal settlers from the area designated for indigenous people. The drive began early in the morning, with a large police team in attendance, and also resulted in the clearing of a mosque where some evicted individuals had taken shelter.
This latest development follows a previous eviction drive conducted on September 12 last year, which turned violent and resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with 33 others injured. Despite the administration’s directives, some evicted individuals had planned to rebuild their homes in the area, prompting the Kamrup Metro district administration to launch the fresh eviction drive.
Local organizations have expressed gratitude for the administration’s efforts to restore order in the area. However, the issue remains contentious, with concerns over the treatment of marginalized communities and the use of force by authorities. The Supreme Court had earlier stayed the eviction drive, directing the state of Assam to maintain the status quo.
