GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court (SC) Collegium has approved the proposal for the appointment of two additional judges, Justice Kardak Ete and Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, as permanent judges in the Gauhati High Court. The decision was made in a meeting held on January 7, 2025.
Justice Kardak Ete, who was elevated as the Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on March 13, 2023, has had a distinguished career. He completed his LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim in 1999. He was designated as Senior Advocate in 2014 and has also served as the Additional Advocate General for the State of Arunachal Pradesh in 2011. Additionally, he was appointed as Senior Additional Advocate General in 2016 and as Acting Advocate General in 2021.
Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, who was elevated as the Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on April 20, 2023, has also had a notable career. He obtained his B.Sc. degree from Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, and thereafter an LL.B. degree from the University Law College, Gauhati University, in 1994. He further obtained his LL.M. degree from Gauhati University in 1997. After obtaining his law degree, Justice Kalita enrolled as an advocate under the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, & Sikkim on September 23, 1994, and practised mainly in district courts for about four years. He also served as a lecturer in the J.B. Law College at Guwahati from 1998 for about two years. Justice Kalita joined the Assam Judicial Service on May 10, 2000.
