GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that it was former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had brought the attention of the nation to the Assam Agitation by making a statement in the Parliament on it. He said that the former Prime Minister had been involved in the Assam Agitation since 1981.

The State BJP observed the birth anniversary of Vajpayee as the good governance day at the field of Karbi Club at Hengrabari in Guwahati on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said, “Vajpayeeji means devotion to the nation for humanity and truthfulness. Following his footsteps, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also taken virtues like ‘Sabka saath, Sabka vikash’.”

Sonowal said that Vajpayee raising the issue of Assam Agitation in the Parliament had boosted the morale of the agitationists at that time.

On the current agitation against the CAA in the State, Sonowal said, “The Congress and the Left parties have ignited the fire against the new Act through false propaganda. The people of the State should know this. The present situation in Assam is due to the Congress allowing foreigners to stay in the State.”
