GUWAHATI: GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) officials conducted an eviction drive on the footpaths at Ganeshguri here today. The drive against vendors doing business on footpaths has been going on in different areas of Guwahati since November 1.

In October, the civic body evicted around 50 vendors from footpaths in different areas of the city. The GMC officials seized materials used by vendors.

The GMC authorities have made it clear that no person can vend on roadsides. Apart from evicting such vendors, the civic body has also authorized its officials to slap fines on vendors who defy the order.

A section of vendors says that they do vend to eke out their livelihood. "If the civic body does not allow us to vend, how can we make both ends meet? We have been demanding separate vending zones in Guwahati to make us carry out our business. However, our demand continues to fall on deaf ears," a vendor said.
