Veteran journalist Pushp Paul Singh breathes his last

A noted journalist of the region, Pushp Paul Singh, passed away on Monday due to heart problems.

GUWAHATI: A noted journalist of the region, Pushp Paul Singh, passed away on Monday due to heart problems.

According to reports, he had been suffering from ailments related to the heart for quite some time now and passed away because of the same at about 1 AM on April 17. Apart from being a veteran journalist, he was also associated with social work. As the Chairman of the Khalsa Centre Northeast, he was instrumental in multiple free food distribution drives as well as oxygen supplies during the COVID pandemic.

Pushp Paul Singh started his career in the journalism field with the Times of India in the state of Tripura. He also worked with the Economic Times and the BBC. He also started the first news portal in Northeast India. He had been associated with the field of journalism for over 30 years at the time of his death. His contributions in the field, especially in relation to the coverage of various topics from the region, were exemplary.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his condolences on the passing of the veteran journalist. He took to Twitter and mentioned, “Deeply pained to learn about the demise of veteran journalist Pushp Paul Singh, who was a well-known face of media for 3 decades in the Northeast. I offer my sincere condolences to his aggrieved family & well-wishers. Om Shanti!”

The Union Minister for Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju, also expressed his condolences on Twitter, as he wrote, “The world of journalism mourns the loss of Sh PP Singh ji, a veteran reporter whose commitment to integrity & passion in reporting was exemplary. His decades-long coverage of Assam & the Northeast will be remembered. My thoughts & prayers are with his family & loved ones.”

The Journalists’ Union of Assam (JUA) also gave their condolences on the deaths of Puspa Paul Singh and Manindra Das of Barpeta. President Samim Sultana Ahmed and general secretary Dhanjit Kumar Das said in a statement that both veteran journalists contributed to the field of journalism in Assam. JUA leaders remembered PP Singh for his inquisitive journalism and Manindra Das for his in-depth analysis and study in his articles and reportages. The JUA urged the government to establish an independent media centre and, therein, create a photo gallery of deceased veteran journalists of the state.
