GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s open declaration for shelters to Hindus entering India from the neighbouring countries will only instate a reign of terror on Hindus and other minorities there.

Addressing the media at Congress Legislature Party (CLP) office at Dispur on Monday, Saikia said: “The Prime Minister’s statement will only make fundamentalists of the neighbouring countries opt for a reign of terror on Hindus and other minorities there so as to make them flee for India.”

Debabrata Saikia, however, said: “Bangladesh is a secular country that has as many as 18 Hindu members of parliament.”

The CLP leader asked the Centre to cancel the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. “The AICC (All India Congress Committee) has decided to oppose the Bill in the Rajya Sabha,” he said.

Reacting to the Prime Minister’s statement on the development front in Assam and the Northeast, Saikia said that Modi had refrained from depicting the real picture. “The Rail Budget during the UPA government at the Centre had a proposal for double laning from New Bongaigaon-Agyathuri. That’s still to be a reality. There was a bridge project connecting Majuli. Even Union minister Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of the project. Now the project is in cold storage. Air connection between Assam and other States of the Northeast has also deteriorated. Direct flights between Guwahati and Aizawl, and Guwahati and Jorhat have been withdrawn.”

The CLP leader further said that coal syndicate is very active in the State. “This syndicate is being run by those who’re close-confidantes of the government. The findings of the CID investigation into coal syndicate should be placed in the Assembly,” Debabrata Saikia demanded.
