GUWAHATI: The AIUDF has decided to go it alone in the 2026 Assembly election in the state. The party took this decision at its meeting between MLAs and office-bearers of the party today.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, AIUDF Vice President Aminul Islam said, "The meeting decided to go it alone in the forthcoming assembly election in the state. The party will field candidates in as many as 35 constituencies. Right now, we have adopted the policy of going it alone. We won't approach any party or political formation for a coalition. If any party or formation invites us with respect, the party may rethink."

On the Dr. Hiren Gohain-led Nagarik Samaj not inviting the AIUDF in its recent first meeting, Islam said, "In the past Assembly election in the state, Dr. Gohain sir invited and suggested we stitch a coalition with the Congress. We obeyed Dr. Gohain's advice in letter and spirit. However, this time around, the Nagarik Samaj hasn't invited us. In the formation of INDIA in the last Lok Sabha election, they didn't include us. We had to fight the Lok Sabha poll alone. We've learnt a lesson from our defeat in the Lok Sabha poll. If any party or formation invites us with respect, we may rethink."
