World Meteorological Day celebrated at Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati

Guwahati: World Meteorological day was celebrated at Regional Meteorological Centre Guwahati jointly by India Meteorological Department and Indian Meteorological Society, Guwahati Chapter. The theme for this year's World Meteorological Day is ‘The Sun, The Earth and The Weather’.

An exhibition was organized showcasing models, posters and various meteorological instruments. This created awareness amongst students and common people about Meteorology and services being provided by the India Meteorological Department to various users. Meteorological Observatory was kept open. Visitors were explained about the importance of various meteorological parameters and were shown modern weather observing equipment. They were briefed about taking meteorological observations, their processing and dissemination of products to different users and to the general public.

The program started under the Chairmanship of Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, RMC Guwahati and President IMS, Guwahati Chapter. The Chief Guest of the programme was Prof. (Dr.) Anil Goswami, Ex. Principal, Cotton College, Guwahati.

Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, RMC Guwahati welcomed all the guests. In his introductory speech, he explained about the theme of the World Meteorological Day. The Sun is the source of energy which drives the weather, ocean currents and hydrological cycle and above all, life on the earth. But human activities disturbed the entire ecosystem. Now there is an urgent need to save our earth for which everybody should contribute by doing good green deeds.

(Dr.) Anil Goswami, Ex. Principal, Cotton College, Guwahati, in his lecture quoted that this year’s theme has wide implication associated with estimation and controlling climatic parameters of our home planet. Thus, it is intimately involved with our day-to-day life and comfort and preparation for adverse circumstances.

Sunit Das, Scientist-E described about the importance of weather forecasts in different fields. He explained about various types of customised weather forecasts for various users.
