World Senior Citizen Day in Guwahati Highlights Respect, Active Role for Elderly

GUWAHATI: The Centre for Senior Citizens of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Guwahati Kendra, celebrated World Senior Citizen Day at its Ulubari premises on Thursday, bringing together senior citizens, students, distinguished personalities and community members.

The programme began with an inaugural address by S K Roy, former Secretary to the Government of Assam and Secretary of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Guwahati Kendra. He stressed the need to create a society where senior citizens are respected, valued and provided opportunities to remain actively engaged in community life.

A cultural programme featuring students of the Kendra’s Kala Kendra and senior citizens was also organised, highlighting intergenerational participation.

The event was attended by Padma Shri awardee and social worker Ajoy Kumar Dutta, former Assam DGP and former Axom Xahitya Xabha president Kuladhar Saikia, singer and music director Manisha Hazarika, and India Carbon Ltd General Manager Shyamal Bhattacharya.

The guests highlighted the contributions of senior citizens to families and society and stressed the importance of ensuring their social, cultural and intellectual engagement. They said ageing should be viewed as a stage enriched by experience, knowledge and wisdom rather than merely as a period of dependency.

More than 100 people attended the celebration. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Proshanta Borua, Treasurer of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Guwahati Kendra, a press release said.
